George Santos' legal team is in contact with the Department of Justice after an NPR report accused the former congressman of being reported by Kalshi on insider trading claims.

The disgraced politician was just released from federal prison late last year after being convicted of wire fraud alongside aggravated identity theft. President Donald Trump had commuted his sentence three months into his seven-year term.

"My legal team and I were made aware by a report from NPR yesterday that the DOJ might be looking into me. So now my legal team is in contact with the DOJ to see what is going on," Santos wrote on X Wednesday afternoon.

The NPR report claimed that the DOJ was investigating Santos after Kalshi, a prediction market website, reported him to the agency over bets that were guessing if he'd attend Trump's State of the Union or not.

According to the article, Santos first said he was going to the SOTU on social media. Sources told the outlet that Santos then placed bets on Kalshi that he was not going to attend the address, and ultimately was a no-show.

"Watching SOTU from an airport tv was not part of the plan! FML," he wrote on X at the time.

"The bases of the accusation is preposterous and I look forward to supplying any information asked of me to any agency that inquires, till then media please do not inquire," he wrote Wednesday.

"I will comment further when appropriate and clarify everything accordingly while being mindful and respectful of any process that might be underway."

Santos has continuously caught public attention, first for his congressional term shrouded with controversy and his ultimate removal from his seat, to his prior conviction in which he asked Trump for executive power to release him.

"Mr. President, I have nowhere else to turn. You have always been a man of second chances, a leader who believes in redemption and renewal. I am asking you now, from the depths of my heart, to extend that same belief to me," he wrote to Trump at the time.

The Department of Justice did not immediately respond to a request for comment by USA TODAY.
