Through the America250 initiative, events are being organized throughout the United States as the country celebrates its 250th birthday this weekend.

But the Great American State Fair and Fourth of July celebrations on the National Mall in Washington DC are planned by a different organization, one that is not directly affiliated with America250.

Here's what to know about Freedom 250, a White House-backed public-private partnership that has organized the seemingly sparsely attended fair.

What is Freedom 250?

Freedom 250 was created by the White House to help lead national celebrations surrounding the 250th birthday of the United States.

It was launched through the Task Force 250 initiative, which President Donald Trump formed to plan separate events from America250.

Freedom 250 has already transformed DC with a series of events tied to the nation's 250th anniversary, including Rededicate 250 on the National Mall, the 16-day Great American State Fair, a a night of combat sports on the lawn at the White House and an upcoming inaugural IndyCar street race around the National Mall.

The Great American State Fair is funded through a combination of public and private dollars. But there has been some lack of transparency over Freedom 250 funding, with The New York Times reporting earlier this year that Freedom 250 traded access to Trump for donations that range from $1 million to nearly $10 million.

Freedom 250 describes itself as a nonpartisan initiative, though many of its marquee events have been closely tied to Trump and his administration.

How is Freedom 250 different from America250?

America250 is the official commission designed by Congress in 2016 to "plan, encourage, develop and coordinate" commemoration's of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

While America250 serves as the congressionally chartered initiative overseeing the semiquincentennial, Freedom 250 was established by the Trump administration to carry out the White House's vision for the celebration.

America 250 Board Chair Rosie Rios told USA TODAY in December the two efforts were working "very closely" to ensure “the interests of the president and all the federal agencies are reflected” in the celebrations."

“This president deserves to plan the celebration that he wants to plan, and we are very supportive of that,” Rios said at the time.
