Time change 2026: When we fall back and daylight saving time ends

You may have noticed the sun setting a little earlier each evening — a sign that daylight saving time is nearing its end.

Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, Nov. 1, when clocks will fall back one hour to 1 a.m. The change marks the return to standard time, which will remain in effect through the winter.

Turning the clocks back means earlier sunsets in the evening, but it also brings more daylight to the morning hours.

The twice-a-year clock change has fueled a yearslong debate in Congress over whether Americans should continue switching between daylight saving time and standard time.

The Sunshine Protection Act would make daylight saving time permanent, eliminating the need to change clocks twice a year. Supporters have argued that keeping more daylight in the evening could benefit families, businesses and outdoor activities.

Unless Congress approves legislation changing the current system, however, most Americans will still turn their clocks back one hour in November and move them forward again when daylight saving time returns in the spring.

The Sunshine Protection Act currently awaits further action in the Senate.
