2 more people arrested after another attack near Sam Altman's house

April 13, 2026, 9:52 a.m. ET

Two more people were arrested in San Francisco over the weekend after a second attack near the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Law enforcement responded to the city's Russian Hill neighborhood for a potential shots fired call early on April 12, the San Francisco Police Department said in a statement. Police learned that two people had driven past a residence in the neighborhood around the time of the alleged shooting in a vehicle that belonged to Amanda Tom, 25.

Police detained Tom and 23-year-old Muhamad Tarik Hussein and they were booked into San Francisco County Jail for negligent discharge. Officers found three firearms while executing a search warrant at the residence where Tom and Hussein were arrested.

“The SFPD takes crimes involving guns extremely seriously, and anyone committing acts like these will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew. “I want to thank our officers whose swift actions identified these suspects, took them into custody, and got dangerous weapons off our streets.”

The arrests come after a 20-year-old man attempted to firebomb Altman's home on April 10. That suspect also made threats outside the headquarters of Open AI, Altman’s Bay Area artificial intelligence startup.

A spokesperson for Open AI told USA TODAY the alleged shooting on April 12 was an unrelated incident that did not appear to be connected to or targeting Altman's home. San Francisco police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The San Francisco Standard reported the residence targeted in the alleged shooting belonged to Altman, the tech guru behind ChatGPT. A person in the passenger seat of the vehicle appeared to fire a round out the window, and the compound's security staff heard a gunshot, the outlet reported, citing an initial police report.

OpenAI has faced backlash for attempting to strike a deal with the government for it to use the company’s technology in classified operations. Altman has become prominent for simultaneously pushing artificial intelligence forward while also warning the emerging technology could pose an "existential risk."
