2 deputies shot, 1 killed in Virginia; search for suspect underway
The suspect is accused of killing one deputy and wounding another in a gunfight at a rural southern Virginia home.
A search is underway for a suspect accused of fatally shooting a Virginia sheriff’s deputy late May 29.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office on May 30 said they are searching for Michael Puckett, who is accused of killing one deputy and wounding another in a gunfight at a rural southern Virginia home.
Just before 9:30 p.m., sheriff’s deputies received a request from a family member to conduct a wellness check at a home off Fancy Gap Highway, in Cana, Sheriff Kevin Kemp said in a news release. Upon arrival, two deputies made contact with Puckett, who officials said opened fire during their encounter. Deputies returned fire.
Both deputies were hit, Kemp said. Deputy Logan Utt had fatal injuries and was pronounced dead. The second deputy was hit in his ballistic vest and, just after midnight on May 30, received medical evaluation and was described as in stable condition.
Puckett fled the scene, though it’s unclear where he went. Kemp said Puckett is considered armed and extremely dangerous.
“We’re still actively searching for the suspect,” Kemp told USA TODAY in the early afternoon of May 30. He added it’s unclear whether Puckett took off on foot or by vehicle.
Several agencies are working with the local sheriff’s office, Kemp said, including U.S. Marshals. Virginia State Police is also investigating the shooting, and the state agency said on social media the Marshals are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to Puckett’s arrest.
The sheriff's office urged anyone who sees the suspect or has information on his whereabouts not to engage him. Instead, people should call 911.
Deputy Utt, 31, joined the sheriff’s office in 2023 and was a military veteran, according to an agency news release. His lifelong dream was to become a deputy sheriff. Kemp said he is a husband and father.
