  • The revoked funds were previously granted by the US Department of Education and allocated for school improvements and student resources.
  • Several York County school districts are owed millions, including $8.2 million for York City School District.

Gov. Josh Shapiro has joined a multi-state lawsuit with 15 other states and the District of Columbia challenging the Trump Administration’s decision to revoke $185 million in funding to Pennsylvania schools and education centers, according to a news release.

In early 2025, the United States Department of Education granted Pennsylvania an extension of time to access hundreds of millions of dollars in funds previously awarded both public and private schools, according to the release.

On Friday, March 28, 2025, the Pennsylvania Department of Education was informed that Education Department had rescinded previously approved extensions.

These extensions allowed Pennsylvania to continue accessing awarded funds – which have already been obligated to education programs – through March 2026, according to the release. But the rescission letter declared that the period for accessing the funds had already expired.

Canceling the federal funding could leave school districts and local taxpayers on the hook for already started projects, according to the release.

Seven York County school districts stand to lose funding

According to a news release by Shapiro's press office, these funds contribute to mental health resources for students, high-speed internet access, and enables HVAC installation in schools. Nearly $12 million of these funds were earmarked for seven York County school districts, according to governor, including:

  • Dover Area School District: $1,126,984.38
  • Northeastern York School District: $29,628
  • South Western School District: $2,414,304.55
  • Southern York County School District: $322.20
  • Spring Grove Area School District: $19,123
  • York City School District: $8,266,255.24
  • York Suburban School District: $5,056.99

It was not immediately clear what the York County districts planned to do with the federal funding.

In February, the governor filed a lawsuit challenging what he called the Trump Administration’s "unconstitutional freeze of federal funding," and last week Shapiro joined another multistate lawsuit with 22 other states and the District of Columbia, working to protect public health in Pennsylvania after the Trump Administration canceled more than half a billion dollars in public health grants.

The governor said he has restored $2.7 billion in federal funding owed to Pennsylvanians.

“Congress and the federal government made a commitment to our students, and school districts across Pennsylvania started construction to make schools safer, delivered supplies to students, and invested to create more opportunity for our kids based on that commitment,” Shapiro said.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
