HOUSTON — The U.S. Coast Guard said Friday it is searching for a woman who went missing from a Carnival cruise ship.

Carnival Liberty, built by Carnival Cruise Lines in 2005, weighs in at 110,000 GT and holds 2,974 people at double occupancy.

The woman, 33-year-old Samantha Broberg, fell overboard, Carnival officials said.

Broberg was reported missing by traveling companions on the cruise ship Carnival Liberty, the company said.

Footage from the Carnival Liberty’s cameras showed Broberg falling overboard around 2 a.m. Friday, according to Carnival officials.

“Unfortunately, it appears the guest may have gone overboard early this morning,” Carnival said in a statement. “Authorities were notified, including the U.S. Coast Guard, which is initiating a search effort in the area where the ship was located when the individual was last seen. ... We are keeping our guest and her loved ones in our thoughts during this difficult time.”

The ship departed from Galveston on Thursday on a four-day cruise to Mexico.
