Wildfires in Georgia and Florida have set thousands of acres ablaze as extreme drought grips the region.

One of the largest fires, the Pineland Road wildfire, has grown to consume 31,307 acres near Fargo, Georgia, about 120 miles northeast of Tallahassee, Florida, and is only 10% contained, according to USA TODAY's wildfire data. Another fire, the Highway 82 fire in Atkinson, Georgia, around 258 miles southeast of Atlanta, has set 5,531 acres ablaze and is only 15% contained. Since it was discovered on April 20, the Highway 82 wildfire has destroyed 90 homes.

On April 22, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency for 91 counties in the state due to the wildfires, according to a news release published by Georgia's Office of the Governor.

Multiple counties across Florida and Georgia have enacted burn bans, according to the Florida Forest Service and the Georgia Forestry Commission. The burn bans mark Georgia's first-ever.

Drought fuels wildfires in both states

The National Weather Service (NWS) reported "extreme" drought across Florida and Georgia, and "exceptional" drought, which is more severe than "extreme," in northern Florida and southern Georgia.

"With much of Georgia remaining in extreme drought conditions, wildfires have already surpassed the state's 5-year average and continue to spread," Kemp said in a statement.

The dry conditions could contribute to the fires' growth, allowing them to spread faster as dry vegetation, like grass, trees or leaves, continues to fuel them.
