Video shows moment United Airlines flight struck tractor-trailer

May 4, 2026, 12:52 p.m. ET

New dashcam video shows the moment a United Airlines flight struck a tractor-trailer on a New Jersey highway over the weekend.

At around 2 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 3, a United Airlines flight landing at Newark Liberty Airport hit a light pole on a nearby highway, damaging a tractor-trailer and injuring its driver, the airline and officials said.

The incident occurred when the plane was passing over the southbound lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike. The flight went on to land safely, and no passengers were injured, United Airlines said in a statement.

The plane had come from Venice, Italy, and was carrying 221 passengers and 10 crew members, United said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer that was damaged in the incident was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries and has since been released, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey told The Bergen Record, part of the USA TODAY Network.

The tractor-trailer involved in the incident was headed to a Newark airport depot to deliver bread products, Chuck Paterakis, vice president of transportation for Schmidt Bakery and owner of H&S Family of Bakeries, told multiple outlets, including ABC and CBS.

The driver "experienced a commercial plane’s tires landing on the tractor or brushing the top of the tractor," Paterakis said.

Despite the startling dashcam footage from the accident, the driver did not sustain any serious injuries. The truck was not damaged, and the products inside were untouched, Paterakis said.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said.

"We don't want to get ahead of the facts, and oftentimes the first facts are wrong, but obviously there were issues with a couple of vehicles on the roadway," Duffy said.
