Read Trump's texts to Norway prime minister here on Greenland, Nobel

Jan. 19, 2026Updated Jan. 20, 2026, 9:22 a.m. ET

A text exchange between President Donald Trump and Jonas Gahr Støre, Norway’s prime minister, on Jan 18, revealed that three days after he had accepted the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, the wound from being denied the Nobel was as fresh as ever.

Støre had reached out to Trump following his threats the day before to impose a 10% tariff on all goods sent to the U.S. from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the U.K., the Netherlands and Finland unless “a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland.”

“Dear Mr President, dear Donald,” the text began, as it made the case to "de-escalate" tensions and threats. It was signed “Best - Alex and Jonas,” with Alex referring to Alexander Stubb, the president of Finland.

Less than half an hour later, Trump, who has called himself the "President of Peace" wrote saying he was no longer feeling an "obligation to think purely of Peace."

Below is the text exchange which was shared by the Norwegian Prime Minister's office with USA TODAY.

Text message from Prime Minister Støre to President Trump, on Jan. 18, at 3:48 p.m.

«Dear Mr President, dear Donald - on the contact across the Atlantic - on Greenland, Gaza, Ukraine - and your tariff announcement yesterday. You know our position on these issues. But we believe we all should work to take this down and de-escalate - so much is happening around us where we need to stand together. We are proposing a call with you later today - with both of us or separately - give us a hint of what you prefer! Best - Alex and Jonas»

President Donald Trump declared peace is not "purely" his priority after Nobel Peace Prize snub as he defends tariffs over Greenland control.

Text message from President Trump to Prime Minister Støre, on Jan 18, at 4:15 p.m.

«Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America. Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a “right of ownership” anyway? There are no written documents, it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also. I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States. The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland. Thank you! President DJT»
