Usha Vance is pregnant, expecting fourth child with JD Vance

WASHINGTON ‒ Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance are expecting their fourth child, a boy, in what appears will be a historic first: the wife of a sitting vice president having a baby.

The second couple issued a statement on Jan. 20 announcing Usha Vance's pregnancy that said, "Usha and the baby are doing well, and we are looking forward to welcoming him in July."

The Vances currently have two sons and one daughter: 8-year-old Ewan; 5-year-old Vivek and 3-year-old Mirabel. The couple largely keeps their children out of the public view.

"We’re very happy to share some exciting news. Our family is growing!" Usha Vance wrote in a post on X.

No wife of a sitting vice president is believed to have ever given birth while her husband was in office. The last wife of a sitting president to give birth was Frances Cleveland, wife of Grover Cleveland, in 1893. First lady Jaqueline Kennedy, wife of President John F. Kennedy, in 1963 had a premature baby, Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, who died tragically after two days.

"During this exciting and hectic time, we are particularly grateful for the military doctors who take excellent care of our family and for the staff members who do so much to ensure that we can serve the country while enjoying a wonderful life with our children," the Vances said.

JD Vance, 41, and Usha Vance, 39, met at Yale Law School and married in 2014. They are the nation's first millennial second family.

Usha Vance told conservative commentator Meghan McCain in a June podcast that her husband sometimes talked about having a fourth child, but she felt "pretty good" about sticking with three. The second lady didn't rule it out, however. "Never say never," she said.

In an exclusive interview with USA TODAY in December, Usha Vance said she dreams one day of returning to Cincinnati and the family's former home. But she said the couple's three children have had no trouble turning the vice president's residence at the Naval Observatory in Washington into their home.

“They have full run of the place,” the second lady said. When there are late-night party guests, “they come down, take a look, they run back up. They’re really good sleepers, so they’re not particularly bothered by any of it.”
