Watch Secretary of State Marco Rubio take over as DJ at a wedding

May 5, 2026, 2:24 p.m. ET

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is drawing attention online after a video showed him stepping behind a DJ booth at a family wedding.

The video, posted on X by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino on May 2, shows Rubio wearing headphones and working a DJ controller as guests dance and cheer nearby.

"Moments ago… our great Secretary of State DJ’s weddings too," Scavino wrote in the post, which quickly spread across social media and racked up widespread reactions.

Social media reaction ranged from amused to incredulous, with some users joking about Rubio adding DJ to his résumé while others shared memes and edited clips imagining him performing in clubs.

The viral moment offers a rare glimpse of Rubio outside his official role – one typically defined by global diplomacy and high-stakes negotiations.

From the DJ booth to the Vatican

The DJ skills provide a strikingly casual moment for a top U.S. diplomat just days before a high-profile trip to the Vatican.

Rubio is expected to travel to Italy and the Vatican from May 6-8, where he will meet with Pope Leo XIV, according to the State Department. A Vatican calendar notice lists the meeting for May 7.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the trip aims to "advance bilateral relations with Italy and the Vatican," with discussions expected to include the Middle East and "mutual interests in the Western Hemisphere."

The meeting comes amid tension between President Donald Trump and the pope, following Trump’s recent public criticism of the pontiff’s positions on foreign policy.
