  • Donald Trump was convicted of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records on May 30, 2024.
  • Though he has filed an appeal, it has not been erased.

Two years ago on May 30, a New York jury found President Donald Trump guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.

At the time, he was the presumptive Republican nominee for president in the 2024 election and the first former president to be convicted of a crime. Months later, his victory over former Vice President Kamala Harris would be seen as an astonishing political comeback.

The hush money criminal case was one of several legal battles Trump fought in the years between his two terms, and the consequences of those cases have been largely washed away upon his reelection.

Since Trump has returned to office, the Department of Justice has targeted people involved in previous cases against him, including former FBI Director James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and, most recently, a group associated with E. Jean Carroll's sexual abuse lawsuit against Trump.

But did Trump's criminal conviction go away? Here is what to know:

What was Trump charged with?

Trump was charged in four cases, but only one went to trial and resulted in a conviction.

In the New York case that led to his criminal conviction, Trump was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records. Prosecutors argued Trump disguised reimbursements for a $130,000 hush money payment for porn star Stormy Daniels as legal expenses ahead of the 2016 election.

In two federal cases that were dismissed after his reelection, Trump was indicted for allegedly conspiring to overturn the 2020 election and for allegedly mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House. Both charges were dropped, and special counsel Jack Smith resigned.

Trump was also indicted in an election racketeering case in Georgia. The case was dismissed in November 2025. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, whose office brought the charges, was disqualified due to a romantic relationship she had with the special prosecutor on the case.

Was Trump sentenced for his crime?

Trump's sentencing for criminal conviction in the hush money case occurred on Jan. 10, 2025. Trump received an "unconditional discharge," sentence, meaning he received no prison time or probation.

Presiding Judge Juan Merchan wished Trump "Godspeed" on his second presidency.

You can listen to the recording of the sentencing here.

Is Donald Trump a convicted felon?

Yes, though calling someone a "felon" is considered outdated language. Trump's felony conviction has not yet been erased through appeal or expungement.

Has Trump appealed his 34 felonies?

Yes.

In October, Trump submitted a filing to a New York appeals court saying the case rested on "fatal flaws," and some evidence should have been excluded due to immunity received in his first term as president.
