Democrat Christina Hines wins U.S. House race, flips district seat
Democrat Christina Hines won the congressional seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. John James, flipping a Michigan seat as her party gained control of the U.S. House in the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
Hines had 52% of the vote, while her Republican opponent, Michael Bouchard, had 45%, based on unofficial results from Macomb and Oakland counties, with 100% of precincts fully reporting.
Hines, of Warren, in a Nov. 4 news release, said she was "excited to get to work." as a member of Congress.

"I’ll work to lower costs, ensure everyone has access to affordable, quality healthcare, and fight against the corruption in DC so that Congress starts delivering real results for working people," Hines said.
Bouchard conceded the election to Hines in a Nov. 4 statement on X.
"I congratulate Christina Hines on her victory tonight, and will help in anyway possible as she becomes Michigan’s next 10th Congressional District representative," Bouchard said. "I pray for her and her family as they step up to represent us all."
The race for the seat being vacated by James after two two-year terms was considered one of the marquee U.S. House matchups in the state, if not the nation.
While political handicappers consider the 10th, which is comprised of southern Macomb County and Rochester and Rochester Hills in eastern Oakland County, as trending more Republican in recent elections, it has been considered close enough on a partisan basis that Democrats believed it was in reach since it was redrawn before the 2022 election.
And that was especially true in this election, with James' run for governor leaving the seat open and historical trends, an unpopular war and high inflation providing for a favorable environment in which Democrats might flip the seat. With Republicans eager to maintain majority control of the U.S. House, however, they fought vociferously to maintain the seat. Both sides and their allies blanketed the airwaves, spending nearly $50 million in one of the most expensive races in the country.
But it was far from clear ahead of Election Day which candidate would emerge with the win despite the favorable conditions for Democrats.
Hines, as a former assistant prosecutor, had law enforcement experience, as well as Macomb County roots. Perhaps just as importantly, she struck more of a moderate tone than some other Democrats, believing, for example, that the flow of undocumented immigrants across the southern border should be better controlled than it has been at some points in the recent past and that police should get adequate resources.
Bouchard, however, has a family name well known in the region and a background in the military, a potentially important asset in a district that is home to the Detroit Arsenal in Warren and Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township.
