  • President Trump addressed the nation, promising the war in Iran would be over in two to three weeks.
  • The speech follows recent nationwide protests against the administration's actions, including the war.
  • Recent polls show the president's national approval rating is between 34% and 45%.

President Donald Trump spoke directly to Americans last night about the war in Iran, once again promising that the war would be over soon.

In a primetime address from the White House, he said he expects the war to last another 2 to 3 weeks but declared "swift, decisive, overwhelming victories on the battlefield" are already underway. The United States and Israel began a war with Iran on Feb. 28 with coordinated strikes on the country, a campaign that killed the nation’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with dozens of top officials.

"I've made clear from the beginning of Operation Epic Fury that we will continue until our objectives are fully achieved," Trump said. "Thanks to the progress we've made, I can say tonight that we are on track to complete all of America's military objectives shortly, very shortly. We are going to hit them extremely hard over the next two to three weeks. We're going to bring them back to the Stone Ages, where they belong."

According to USA TODAY, the 19-minute speech included no new details about the war's timeline and no more than a brief reference to the possibility of a negotiated settlement.

He did declare that the U.S. will hit Iran "extremely hard" over the next few weeks if no deal is made. He warned that the country could "hit each and every one of (Iran's) electric generating plants very hard and probably simultaneously."

This speech comes after more than 8 million people protested against the Trump administration at more than 3,300 No Kings events on March 28 across the US, with over 100 in Florida. Event organizers cited the third wave of protests being in response to ICE operations, military strikes and the war with Iran, as well as the cost of living and more.

The president did touch on the rising gas prices, blaming the Iranian regime for its attacks on oil tankers. He also indicated an inclination to leave it to other nations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, now in an Iranian chokehold that is driving up energy prices.

Did Trump's speech impact his approval ratings in Florida and the nation? Not yet, but here's what they look like currently.

What goes into a president's approval rating?

According to data agency Gallup, a presidential approval rating is a "simple measure, yet a very powerful one that has played a key role in politics for over 70 years."

A president’s approval rating reflects the percentage of Americans polled who approve of the president’s performance. Anything can affect a president's rating, including legislation passed, actions taken, and elections held.

According to ABC News, an approval rating doesn't just reflect how well the administration is performing for the general public; it can also influence the outcome of an upcoming election and the extent of a politician's accomplishments during their time in office.

How does Trump's approval rating compare with his first term?

Trump ended his first term in 2021 with a final approval rating of 34%, the same as former presidents George W. Bush and Jimmy Carter.

According to Gallup polling, Trump's approval average was 41%. They noted that he is the only president not to have received a job rating of 50% or higher at any point during his presidency.
