I’m Zach Schermele, our congressional correspondent and the primary author of On Politics. You’ll be hearing from me or my colleagues every Monday through Thursday, when I’ll send you the rundown of the day’s biggest political news about Capitol Hill, elections and everything in between.

Congress is my forte, so think of me as your eyes and ears in and around the Senate and House of Representatives. I’ll keep you posted on all the day’s drama, gossip and most importantly, the stories that actually affect everyday Americans (because, perhaps surprisingly, Congress still does a lot that impacts you).

A bit more about me: Before transitioning to congressional reporting, I covered (and still regularly cover) the federal Education Department, including President Trump’s campaign to dismantle it. In prior jobs, I reported on higher education, former New York City Mayor Eric Adams and national LGBTQ+ news. My first official job in journalism was as a local TV reporter in north-central Montana, where I proudly hail from (if you need hiking or skiing recs, shoot me an email).
