Generally, you must be at least 10 years old (see age limits below), have basic swimming skills (be able to swim 200 yards/meters unassisted and tread water for 10 minutes) and be in good physical health. Some courses may require a medical evaluation.
What is the minimum age for PADI certifications?
- 8 years old: Children can participate in introductory programs like Bubblemaker (shallow pool dives).
- 10 years old: Can earn the PADI Junior Open Water Diver certification.
- 10- and 11-year-olds must dive with a PADI Professional or a certified parent/guardian to a maximum depth of 12 meters (40 feet).
- 12- to 14-year-olds may dive to a maximum depth of 18 meters (60 feet) with a certified adult.
- 15 years old: The Junior certification automatically upgrades to a full PADI Open Water Diver certification.
Do I need my own equipment to learn?
Most dive centers will provide the necessary equipment (mask, fins, snorkel, BCD, regulator, tank and weights) for your initial courses. However, many divers eventually purchase their own gear for comfort and familiarity.
