The airline I was flying only allowed basic economy ticket holders to bring a personal item, so naturally I thought: "Challenge accepted." Why would I pay an additional $50 for a carry-on or $100 for a checked bag when I most likely would wear the same outfits again and again?
With so many airlines adding more restrictions on the size of bags you’re allowed and upping the fees for carry-ons, most travelers are getting limited to just personal items. Personal items are smaller bags such as backpacks, tote bags, or handbags; most major US airlines limit personal item dimensions to 18” x 14” x 8”.
If you’re looking to save some money on your next trip, you need to pack smarter. Luckily, I did all the trial and error, so you don’t have to. The most essential part of packing in a personal item is actually having a solid item to pack in. When first deciding what to use as your item, you should make sure the dimensions are within the standard limitations. Some travelers prefer smaller duffel bags to backpacks while more audacious travelers opt for a tote bag.
