Are there exclusions to The Home Depot military discount?
Yes. First and foremost, the military discount generally does not apply to lumber, wire, building materials, value-priced merchandise, appliances, special order items, tool rental fees, labor items, gift cards and services, including freight and delivery. It is also limited to a $400 maximum annual discount that resets each calendar year.
You can shop tax-free on major appliances through The Home Depot’s partnership with the Military Exchange. Alternatively, you can save by going directly through brands like Samsung and GE, which both offer fantastic military discount programs of their own.
How to activate your military discount at The Home Depot
The Home Depot uses SheerID (a trusted third-party service) to verify your military status, so you can't use the discount online or in-store without first linking it to a free The Home Depot account. But don't worry, the setup is quick and completely free.
- Create a free The Home Depot account - Head over to TheHomeDepot.com. In the upper right-hand corner, you’ll see a person icon—that’s the account home. Click that to log in or create an account. You’ll just need typical info like your name, email, and password. Once created, you should be automatically logged in.
- Access the military discount - Your next stop is the Military Benefits page. Scroll to the discount section and select "Get Started." You’ll be asked whether you are the service member or the spouse, then your branch, status, name and birthday. The Home Depot runs this through the SheerID database to verify you in seconds.
- Start saving!
- Shop online: Your 10% discount will apply automatically to eligible items in your cart as long as you're logged in.
- Shop in-store: Open The Home Depot app and scan your Virtual ID (QR code) at the register. While some legacy registers still allow a phone number, having the app ready is the most reliable way to ensure the discount hits your total.
