  • The best rain boots are fully waterproof, provide good traction, and have enough room for thicker socks.
  • This article highlights top rain boot picks for 2026 from brands like Hunter, Dr. Martens, and Sorel.
  • Rain boots differ from snow boots in that they prioritize waterproofing over insulation.

Rain boots are some of the most practical shoes you can own—and they make a big difference on those dreaded downpour days when your go-to sneakers or leather boots won’t cut it. Dressing for soggy weather doesn’t just mean covering up those soles from potential moisture; you also want to ensure that rain boots fit properly and provide plenty of comfort, since they’re usually worn for full days.

The best rain boots, of course, feature fully waterproof outer materials, while also providing enough traction to prevent you from slipping and sliding on wet concrete, grass, and other surfaces. Since the interiors aren’t as warm and cozy as a pair of winter boots, you’ll want options that fit well with enough room for thicker socks.

Ahead, we share top picks for the best rain boots to wear in 2026 from Hunter, Dr. Martens and more, that way you're dressed for success whether you wake up to April showers or a surprise summer thunderstorm.

FAQs

What's the difference between rain boots and snow boots?

The biggest difference between rain boots and snow boots is that rain boots focus on waterproofing, while snow boots offer better insulation, stronger traction and can even get by with water resistance rather than full waterproofing.

Rainboots are also often unlined (though you can find rain boot liners for added warmth and comfort), so they’re not cozy enough to keep feet warm in cold, frigid temperatures. Since snow isn’t as wet upon contact, snow boots don’t require the same kind of waterproofing that rain boots do (so, if you have water-resistant snow boots on, we don’t advise splashing in any melted snow puddles).

How should rain boots fit?

Rain boots should fit snug on your feet, but not too tight—you want to make room for thicker socks since they are unlined. Heel slip should also be kept to a minimum. If you have the right size rain boots but are wearing them on a warmer day when thick socks might be unbearable, a heel pad can help fill the gap and prevent heel slip (which can lead to blisters).

Can I wear rain boots all day?

As far as comfort and support are concerned, rain boots can be hit or miss. While you can absolutely wear rain boots all day, you’ll want to look for features like cushioned insoles and more lightweight materials for lasting comfort while you commute. With that said, waterproof sneakers (like these ones from Sorel or these ones from Solomon) are a great rain boot alternative, especially if you are walking a lot. If you’re commuting to work, it’s also worth packing a pair of regular shoes to slip into at the office, as rain boots tend to feel bulky on the feet and might not align with your company’s dress code.
