Alexi, An Advanced AI Platform, Is Set To Revolutionize The Legal Industry

The legal industry is quite slow when it comes to innovation. However, Alexi, a Canadian-based technology company, is breaking the mold and leading the way in revolutionizing the legal profession with artificial intelligence (AI). Co-founded by Mark Doble, a lawyer and AI enthusiast, and Sam Bhasin, an aerospace engineer with a passion for building disruptive technology, Alexi is reshaping the legal research and services that are conducted.Â
Mark’s trajectory toward starting this company is quite captivating. “When I was a law student I would spend about half my time building software in the library at the law school,” Mark recalls. He was amazed by the potential of AI and natural language processing (NLP) in the legal sector. After a year of working at a law firm, he became aware of the transformative potential that AI has to comprehend and communicate the complexity of law. On the other hand, Sam is an engineer with a background in aerospace technology. He was drawn to the idea of using AI to solve complex problems.
"I believe that the right combination of foundational technologies, data access, and computing power will make AI a game-changer in the legal profession," said Mark.
Alexi is a technology company with a vision to integrate AI into every aspect of a lawyer’s workflow. The company offers various products, each designed to enhance legal processes, saving time and resources for law firms. From understanding complex laws to preparing for trials and equipping lawyers with the knowledge they need to navigate intricate legal challenges, Alexi's AI-powered tools are designed to streamline and simplify the legal journey.Â
Alexi's product offerings cater to various aspects of the legal industry. One of its flagship products, Memos, generates comprehensive research memos in response to complex legal questions. This innovation is a significant leap from traditional, time-consuming, and error-prone legal research, which often goes unbilled to clients.
There are two types of tasks in the legal profession: objective and subjective. The former often involves the retrieval of data while the latter involves the application of data. Legal research belongs to the objective category. Therefore, it is the type of task that can be automated with the help of AI. As the use of AI increases, law firms will be able to focus on building better client relationships and delivering higher value-added services.
Alexi has introduced a new product called "Arguments," designed to help lawyers identify legal issues and arguments to help them achieve their desired outcomes. This tool streamlines legal research by generating potential legal arguments based on the law, serving as a foundation for further research.
In addition to "Arguments," Alexi offers two categories of memos: "Instant Memos" and "Pro Memos." Instant Memos are entirely AI-drafted and can be produced within 5 minutes, a significant advancement in the legal industry. For lawyers who may not yet fully trust AI, "Pro Memos" includes a review from a human lawyer.
Alexi stands out from traditional AI companies due to its use of a human-in-the-loop system. With a team of about 25 people, including lawyers, engineers, and domain experts, the company focuses on obtaining high-quality data to improve its AI models. The lawyers on the team verify the accuracy and comprehensiveness of the data produced by AI, in order to train and improve the models.
Venture capitalists have raised concerns about AI adoption in the legal industry, citing the difficulty of making changes and lawyers' fear that AI will replace them. These objections, however, are challenges that can be overcome with a well-planned approach to integration. “Lawyers agree that AI is something they want to adopt, but they must figure out how to do so. The big question is not whether they will adopt AI or not, but how to integrate it in the right way,” emphasizes Mark.Â
AI is poised to transform the legal industry by streamlining objective tasks like drafting documents and conducting legal research. It not only responds to user requests but also proactively identifies areas for improvement, making it a significant shift in the legal landscape. The ultimate goal of Alexi is to build AI systems that truly understand the law, delivering affordable, higher-value, and higher-quality services to clients.
The company launched in Canada in 2017 and is seeing significant traction throughout the United States. The United Kingdom is the next frontier, with plans to expand globally in the coming years. The company is determined to maintain momentum and envisions an AI-driven future in which the entire legal industry benefits.
