USDA Awards Ponix $5 Million Grant for Climate-Smart Agriculture

Atlanta-based company Ponix Farms is quietly making sustainable strides in the system, changing how food is produced and distributed.  

Ponix, a technology company focused on agriculture in Atlanta, works hard to help local food be grown in a way that's good for people and the environment. With Michael Choi as the CEO and co-founder, Ponix recently received a $5 million grant from the USDA to develop new ways to farm that are better for the climate. 

Choi's quest to revolutionize agriculture started in the food desert areas of New York City. Witnessing the struggles to find healthy food firsthand, he co-founded Ponix to reshape how food is grown and distributed. 

Ponix aims to bring sustainable and localized food production. Their hydroponic vertical farming solution uses 90% less land and water than traditional farming. It allows year-round cultivation of pesticide-free fresh produce, promoting public health. Additionally, by establishing farming operations in urban and rural areas, Ponix helps ensure easier access to healthy food and supports local communities. 

The USDA grant represents a significant milestone for Ponix, enabling the expansion of its climate-smart agriculture initiatives. Named the Coalition For Food Security (CFS), this grant supports key projects, including a pilot farm utilizing Ponix's technology to conduct a carbon study. This study will compare Ponix's proprietary indoor farming solution with a traditional 1-acre soil farm to highlight the environmental benefits of hydroponic farming. 

Additionally, CFS plans to enlist 24 underrepresented farmers in Georgia to implement hydroponic farming techniques. This project aims to showcase the extensive impact of climate-friendly agriculture. Its goals include minimizing greenhouse gas emissions while strengthening the resilience and financial well-being of local agricultural communities.
