Offering Life Through Movement: How a Personal Loss Inspired Frederick Griffith to Revolutionize Senior Fitness

Many consider fitness either as a hobby or a career. But for Frederick Griffith, it’s a mission—a mission to empower senior citizens through his accessible, tailored fitness programs at Anew Fitness. But his mission wasn’t born from a business strategy; it came from a personal tragedy.

In 2018, Griffith’s mother, who was a diabetic, suffered a minor toe infection that, due to financial constraints and limited healthcare options, escalated into a devastating amputation. Losing her leg was physically life-altering, but it was the impact on her mental health that struck Griffith the hardest. “When my mom lost her left leg, she could continue on, but mentally, she wasn’t there,” he recalls. “I started training her at home—playing music, encouraging her, celebrating even the smallest victories. I watched her transform. She became a different person, more comfortable in her new reality.”

Inspired by the changes he saw in his mother, Griffith realized that many other seniors lacked access to fitness programs that could help them regain their confidence and mobility. That’s when he founded Anew Fitness, bringing expert-led movement programs directly to older adults. His mother passed away in 2022, but her legacy lives on in every class he teaches and every senior he helps move forward.

Unlike regular gyms, Anew Fitness doesn’t expect seniors to come to them. It brings fitness directly to the communities that need it most. The company partners with senior living centers, churches, and insurance providers to offer on-site classes, giving accessibility to those who may not have the resources or mobility to visit a gym.

“Most seniors are on a fixed income, and gym memberships are expensive. Even if they could afford it, they often don’t know what exercises to do or how to navigate the equipment,” Griffith explains.

Anew Fitness removes these barriers by providing certified trainers who specialize in senior fitness, guiding participants through workouts tailored to their abilities. From line dancing to chair yoga and strength training, the program is designed to help seniors maintain mobility, reduce fall risks, and improve overall well-being.

Griffith has also built a team of instructors who undergo specialized training to understand the unique needs of aging bodies. “The aging process isn’t kind—we naturally lose muscle, bone density, and motor skills. But with the right movement and nutrition, we can slow that process and maintain our independence,” Griffith says.

What started as a grassroots effort has grown into a movement, with Anew Fitness expanding across Louisiana and beyond. Griffith has become a leading voice in senior fitness, using multiple media platforms to reach a wider audience. For instance, for the past three years, Griffith has hosted a weekly Thursday fitness segment sponsored by AARP, guiding seniors through online workouts. Furthermore, after a few featured videos, starting April 16, Griffith will fully launch a once-a-month fitness segment on Fox 8, with the first episode featuring a live easy chair workout designed for at-home accessibility. He has also introduced cohort online fitness sessions for business leaders, proving that movement is vital at all ages.

“Every Thursday with AARP, every class we teach, and every new partnership we form is about showing seniors that movement is possible—and necessary. And the end goal is not just helping them move; it’s to keep them independent longer. That’s a win for them, their families, and even the healthcare system,” he proudly shares.
