Cost reductions, faster deliveries, and improved logistics have boosted New Jersey based Marine Electric Systems’ financial performance this year, despite ongoing challenges in the defense manufacturing sector as well as disruptions to the global supply chain.

The company’s turnaround is especially timely as Marine Electric repairs, reverse engineers, and modernizes end-of-life products originally manufactured by now defunct defense contractors.   This work enables the U.S. Navy to maintain key defense assets while updating essential legacy systems.  Today, their Salinity Systems, Temperature Monitoring Systems, and Audio Systems can be found on Navy ships around the world.

The Turnaround

Marine Electric Systems was founded in 1942 and quickly became a key supplier to the US Navy. Since then, the company has experienced many ups and downs.  However, they have always found a way to “keep going.”

A new leadership team took the helm in April 2024. Since then, they have worked diligently to improve EBITDA, allowing for updated manufacturing practices, substantially improved on-time performance, upgraded IT infrastructure and streamlined HR processes.

The new and improved work environment is readily apparent.  This transformation was best captured by an employee with a 40 year tenure at the company: “The improvements go beyond just better lighting, heating, and amenities.  They represent a complete redefinition of management strategy and the first steps toward creating a supportive culture for everyone at the plant.”

There are many who have worked at Marine Electric Systems for decades (the longest tenured employee has been there 51 years!). By and large, they consider the company home.  Recognizing this deep loyalty, management has committed to creating an environment where these dedicated employees can thrive now and into the future.

Sailing Ahead

With these changes, Marine Electric Systems is in its best position in years: to provide the US Navy with high expertise in machining, surface mounted technologies, and assembly. And it all seems possible – primarily due to a management team that brings with it many years of company turnaround expertise; in fact, they have worked together for 25 years on projects with challenges similar to those they presently face at Marine Electric Systems.

Marine Electric Systems remarkable rebound reflects the military it serves, combining resilience and persistence with forward thinking practices to meet evolving challenges.  Today, they have become an essential partner in maintaining Navy fleet readiness, and their ability to solve complex engineering challenges while respecting budget constraints makes them invaluable.

Thriving after having faced extreme adversity is core to Marine Electric Systems culture, and to the US Navy itself.  This is the theme behind the company’s slogan “If it can be imagined, it can be made.” Today, this slogan aligns with reality as Marine Electric seeks to position itself as the military’s go-to supplier for both legacy system repairs and next generation designs.
