Author Peter Smit is a Doctor of Public Health, formally trained at Johns Hopkins University, specializing in infectious diseases. His career path has shown him what courage means, and he showcases these principles through his protagonists. He also draws on his experience as a world traveler to add depth to his characters. He believes heroes and heroines should fight for noble causes, such as Kristin James, the heroine in "Life Will Never Be the Same Again."

The novel focuses on the heroine's success in facing danger head-on. Smit utilizes this same theme in "Mystery of Los Panos" for his hero, Bart Eckland. The character's initial focus is searching for gold in the Amazon and has to smuggle it across countries in the Middle East. Over time, he takes up a more courageous cause, fighting brutal dictatorships and organized crime, and turns the wealth he discovers over to desperate people fighting for human justice and decent lives.

Smit's characters are born from his adventures as a world traveler for work and pleasure. He started traveling as a child with his father, an international executive, to Europe, Africa, and Australia. He also toured nationally as a health science consultant for an extensive research and development company, and these destinations have shaped the world in which his protagonists live. Smit dove into this wealth of international experience to hone a realistic world in which his characters can show courage and overcome unique dangers.
