Building a Borderless Life Starts with a Mindset Shift

Success doesn't start with strategy. It begins with a mindset. The way you think can either confine your future or expand it. Self-imposed borders often prevent people from even starting. But when you shift your perspective, you begin to see opportunities where others see obstacles.

Sunny Kaila arrived in the United States in 1993 with $20 in his pocket and limited English. “I started my journey behind the wheel of a yellow cab in New York City,” he says. “But I was already thinking bigger.”

He worked nights and studied days, eventually earning a degree in computer science from NJIT. That led to his first tech job as a system administrator in New York. A few years later, Kaila launched IT By Design, a managed service provider. “I knocked on doors, asking small businesses if they needed IT support,” Kaila says. “That’s how it all began.”

Exponential Success Requires Intention as an Entrepreneur

Kaila believes success only comes with intention: “You can't just stumble into something great. You have to design it.”

He credits his growth to industry conferences and peer groups. “Those events gave me the knowledge I lacked,” Kaila explains. “They also gave me community and collaboration.” These resources are now even more accessible through virtual platforms.

Growing Beyond Borders

After the 2008 financial crisis, Kaila noticed something intriguing: large corporations were increasingly using offshore teams in India and the Philippines. He saw an opportunity. “I thought, why not me?” he says. “I speak the language, I understand the culture, and I know how to build bridges.”

He developed a 24/7 tech support model using global talent. Today, IT By Design operates with offshore teams in multiple countries. “If you want to grow, you need borderless talent.”

As Kaila broke physical borders with his global business model, he realized that every part of life has borders that must be overcome. He developed a framework to help people identify and break through borders in four key areas: health, relationships, career, and impact.

Sunny encourages anyone who wants to see growth in these areas to adopt a borderless mindset. “Learn to look at your life as a series of possibilities. What is preventing those possibilities from becoming reality? Are these borders self-imposed?”

A Full Circle Moment

Kaila’s story includes a moment he’ll never forget. “When I first came to New Jersey, I couldn’t afford a ferry ticket to Liberty Island,” he says. “I stood on the shore and looked at the Statue of Liberty from a distance.”

In 2021, Kaila hosted a conference for his company. He rented the entire island. “As I stood there, I cried. That view reminded me of what freedom and opportunity mean. The American Dream is real. I lived it.”

Life by Design

Kaila now helps others live what he calls a Borderless Life. His book Borderless Life: How to Build Your Ever-Expanding Future shares strategies for growing across boundaries. “The borders that limit us aren’t on a map. They’re in our minds,” he says.

His company continues to grow, with teams in India, the Philippines, and soon, the UK and Australia. “The future isn't about where you are. It's about what you're building and who you're building it with,” Kaila concludes.
