Hive to Home Candle Co.: A Platform for Systemic Change Powered by Community and Lit by Conviction

At a time when it’s easy to feel powerless in the face of large-scale problems, there are people quietly doing the work, turning hardship into action, values into businesses, and community into a compass. These are the individuals who don’t wait for permission to make a difference. They take what little they have and build something lasting. Hive to Home Candle Co. is an embodiment of that spirit.

Riley Kidder

Based in Michigan, Hive to Home was founded by Riley Kidder, whose mother and aunt crafted beeswax candles for local pop-up markets. It was more of a hobby than a venture, but Kidder saw something more. While studying business in college, he stepped in and gave the endeavor new life. From a family pastime, it blossomed into a purpose-led company that pours community, care, and advocacy into every jar.

Hive to Home offers handcrafted, small-batch candles made from locally harvested beeswax and organic coconut oil. The products are known for being clean-burning, phthalate-free, and free from synthetic dyes or paraffin. From the relaxing blend of lavender and sandalwood in “Fairy’s Laundry” to the grounding scent of patchouli and cedar in “Peace Lover,” each fragrance is designed to bring comfort and calm.

However, besides scent and wax, it’s what these candles stand for that draws people in. They offer messages of hope, resistance, and collective care. Hive to Home believes that businesses should support the working class and uplift marginalized voices. The “Candles for a Cause” series was born from that very principle, offering customers a chance to support real-world issues while enjoying the warmth and ambiance of a handcrafted candle.

Indeed, Hive to Home’s candles don’t just smell good. They do good. Every candle sold helps plant a tree through the Arbor Day Foundation, and many collections, such as the Pride line, donate a portion of proceeds to organizations.

“I didn’t start this company just to make money. From the beginning, I had a bigger vision rooted in community, sustainability, and social justice,” Kidder shares. “Many businesses operate to generate capital or maximize shareholder value. But for me, it’s about doing business differently, thoughtfully, consciously, and with care for the people and planet affected at every step of the process.”

This commitment to social advocacy isn’t an afterthought. Kidder’s lived experience is the very soil from which Hive to Home grows. Raised in a working-class household that often struggled to make ends meet, he knows firsthand what it means to go without. When the pandemic struck, both of his parents lost their jobs. Not long after, the home where Kidder lived and ran the business was sold.

Faced with the impossible choice between housing and the business he believed in, Kidder chose the latter. He moved into a pop-up camper and poured everything he had into keeping Hive to Home alive. From that camper, he bought a piece of undeveloped land with the dream of creating a new base of operations. He cleared the lot himself, taught himself building codes, and tried to navigate the maze of township zoning laws.

Despite his efforts, Kidder was eventually forced to sell the land. With the help of friends, family, and neighbors, people who offered advice, tools, and even barn space, he kept the business afloat. “I worked construction in exchange for a workspace, hand-poured candles on borrowed tables, and slowly rebuilt what I’d nearly lost. It was the community that kept the dream alive,” Kidder says.

That spirit now infuses every aspect of the business. Hive to Home has developed a robust business-to-business arm, partnering with companies that share its values of sustainability and advocacy. Corporate clients come for a product that aligns with their ethics. Eco-conscious organizations and socially engaged teams are drawn to Hive to Home because it offers something rare: integrity.

Ultimately, the vision is bigger than candles. Kidder never set out to be a traditional entrepreneur. At one point, he dreamed of running for public office, but realized there are many barriers to that path. So instead, he asked a different question: “What can I do with what I have right now?” Hive to Home was his answer.

The founder’s long-term goal is to leverage the company’s growth to invest in tangible, grassroots solutions. Kidder wants to purchase land and build affordable housing from the ground up, offering safe, stable homes to people who, like him, have faced housing insecurity and systemic barriers. He’s done the work before. He knows how to build. Now he wants to do it for others.

In every candle, there’s a purpose. In every order, a seed of change. Hive to Home Candle Co. invites like-minded companies to join its mission to improve the system and to demonstrate that business can be something radically different. Something better.
