From High Alert to Healing: Samantha Kearns Explains Why Your Nervous System Is Your Body’s Secret Service Agent

If you ask Samantha Kearns to describe the nervous system, she won’t reach for medical jargon first. Instead, she lights up with one of her favorite analogies: “Think of your nervous system as your own Secret Service detail. If you are the president, your nervous system is scanning the room, who’s a threat, where the exits are, and who’s behaving strangely. It notices everything and then feeds you only what’s mission critical.”
As the founder of Internal Evolution, Kearns has built her coaching practice around helping people understand this hidden ally. “Your brain can’t absorb everything; it would combust. But your nervous system never forgets. It remembers every fight, every stressor, every unsafe person or situation. That’s why sometimes just being around someone triggers you; you may not remember the moment, but your body does.”

That vigilance is protective, but it can also become overwhelming. A nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight can leave people anxious, reactive, or exhausted. “When your nervous system is on high alert, you may find yourself snapping at a colleague, feeling drained after seeing a family member, or even experiencing panic attacks,” Kearns explains. “That’s your body doing its job, trying to keep you safe.”
The problem arises when these signals are ignored. “If you don’t listen to your nervous system, it will eventually shut you down,” she says. “That’s when you see people struggling with chronic pain, autoimmune issues, depression, or burnout. Your body is trying to get your attention.”
The good news, Kearns emphasizes, is that the nervous system is not just a watchdog; it’s a resource. With the right tools, its protective instincts can be transformed into guidance for better living. “When you regulate your nervous system, you can use it to your advantage. Instead of spiraling in stress, you can pause, assess, and make choices that actually serve you, whether that’s limiting time with a draining person or trusting your gut when a situation feels wrong.”
Regulation, however, takes intention and practice. For Kearns, breathwork and sound healing are two of the most effective entry points. “Deep belly breathing and sound vibrations together aim to give your nervous system a chance to step out of constant defense mode.”
She’s quick to note the distinction between relaxation and healing. “If you are just looking to relax, an online video on breathwork or a sound bath playlist is great. You will feel calmer and sleep better,” she says. “A trauma-informed coach can help you work on the patterns of your life. Someone who can walk with you when things come up that you didn’t even know were there.”
That’s where her six-month coaching program comes in, a process she describes as “a radical approach to wellness coaching.” Through breathwork, sound healing, and guided self-discovery, clients unpack what their nervous system has stored, then learn to regulate and rewire. “Your nervous system’s only job is to keep you alive. That means it will fight change tooth and nail until the new path feels safe. Coaching helps you bridge that gap so you can move forward without sabotaging yourself.”

She compares it to climbing Mount Everest. “You wouldn’t attempt it with your high school basketball coach. You would want someone who’s been there, who knows the terrain. Healing is the same; you need someone who has walked through the fire and can guide you safely.”
Kearns has walked that path herself, from burnout in the corporate world to rebuilding her life with nervous system regulation at the center. Today, her clients learn not only to calm their stress but to channel their nervous system’s vigilance into authenticity, resilience, and trust.
“When you are regulated, you trust yourself,” she says. “You know you can handle what life throws your way. That’s when you feel capable, powerful, and aligned with the life you actually want to live. And the best part is that your secret service is right there with you, working for you, every step of the way.”
