Zane Carson Carruth’s journey exemplifies this transformation. Her longstanding attachment to pens, paper, and small, intimate stories evolved into a mission-driven career of writing children’s books that comfort, educate, and foster meaningful moments between parent and child. Her signature series, The World’s First Tooth Fairy … Ever, showcases tales refined over the years. Each one is infused with heart and imagination.

“I remember sitting with a spiral notebook while waiting for my daughter one afternoon. This character of a curious little fairy that I later named Abella just emerged. Her adventures are full of whimsy but always rooted in emotional growth,” Carruth shares. “I kept that first manuscript tucked away for years, until I spoke to a fellow author who’d self-published, and it lit a fire beneath me. I remember thinking, ‘If she could do it, so could I.’ That moment gave me the push I needed to finally bring the series to life.”

The author’s creative journey began in early childhood. “When I was in elementary school, I remember writing a story about a frog,” Carruth shares. “My teacher read it and praised me, making me feel that my voice mattered. Her encouraging words sparked something in me.” This gentle validation is both a theme in her stories and a guiding principle in her creative process. 

Rather than rigid outlines, she prefers to let scenes arrive organically, allowing emotional flow to shape the narrative. Carruth often begins with a small image, such as a fallen pearl or a misplaced wand, and lets the story unspool from emotion. The result is short, lyrical narratives that aim to be enjoyable, uplifting, and emotionally instructive. 

That emotional flow is especially evident in The World’s First Tooth Fairy…Ever series that blends lighthearted plots with consistent emotional depth. Abella and her friend Darcie navigate challenges, such as being captured by a bee, the new responsibility of receiving a magic wand, and helping a horse with a toothache, with grace and curiosity. Abella’s First Tooth, an animation based on the series can now be viewed on YouTube.

Essentially, Carruth’s stories emphasize empathy, self-awareness, and emotional growth. She explains, “The book characters show how to apologize, support one another, and reflect on what went wrong.” Her goal is to guide young readers toward a simple but powerful question: “What did I learn from this?” That question echoes throughout her narratives, gently encouraging children to view mistakes as meaningful opportunities to grow and understand themselves better.

Carruth’s message resonated deeply with families and communities. It led to opportunities for public engagements and broader visibility, allowing her stories to reach a broader audience. These further reinforced the emotional core of Carruth’s work, connecting her work with those seeking meaningful narratives for children.

That mission extends well beyond the page. Carruth serves on nonprofit boards in Houston, acts as vice president of the Carruth Foundation, and supports animal- and community-focused organizations. She also donates books to children and has released Spanish-language editions to broaden access.
