Early in the firm’s growth, Alexis and Mark were the only two attorneys. Mark focused solely on litigation and client intake, while Alexis managed pre-litigation and negotiations. However, as their caseload grew, thanks to referrals and some print advertising, they decided to hire a manager to help lead the team so the two could focus on being excellent lawyers. The experience offered valuable insight into the kind of leadership their growing firm required. “In hindsight, the reins were handed over without ensuring alignment in values or vision. The manager operated inconsistently with how we treat people, leading to the only time in the firm’s 30-year history when the company culture suffered,” they state.

The subsequent course correction was painful yet transformative, teaching the pair the importance of leadership. When they eventually restarted growing the firm, they did so with a strengthened focus on culture, hiring, and leadership.
