Technology never stands still, and the race to understand what powers the next breakthrough grows more urgent each year. Rising above the noise is one shift that stands to redefine everything: the emergence of advanced materials and nanotechnology. These fields shape the future of artificial intelligence (AI), global innovation, and the industries that depend on them. Few people explain this landscape more clearly than Sanford L. Moskowitz, PhD, a longtime professor and author who has spent his career connecting science, history, and technology.

“The book looks at what… fundamental technology is,” Dr. Moskowitz says of his upcoming work, 'Nano Supremacy: Global Technological Leadership in the New Industrial Age.' “It is the basis for the fourth Industrial Revolution. And it is nanotechnology.”

A Scholar Focused on the Technology That Drives Progress

Dr. Moskowitz has built his career by studying why certain technologies shape entire eras. He is a full professor of international business and global innovation at the College of St. Benedict and St. John's University. Over the years, he developed popular courses on AI, cybersecurity, and the role new technologies play in society.

For Dr. Moskowitz, his research centers on how materials science and nanotechnology influence long-term economic and industrial power. “The question is who is ahead in… nanotechnology,” he explains. He views this topic as essential for understanding the future of advanced manufacturing, computing, and innovation.

Dr. Moskowitz is also updating a major 50- to 60-page article for Wiley's Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology. The work will expand his portfolio in the global advanced materials industry.

A Career Built on Curiosity and Interdisciplinary Thinking

Much of Dr. Moskowitz's strength comes from an unusual academic path. He started studying physics as an undergraduate, then earned multiple graduate degrees at Columbia University in history, philosophy, and the history of technology. This mix shaped how he thinks and writes.

“There has been a growing importance in recent years for those in the field of innovation to embrace an interdisciplinary mentality,” Dr. Moskowitz says. He believes the best understanding comes from crossing boundaries rather than staying in one narrow field.

Dr. Moskowitz’s writing reflects this approach. He has written substantial books on innovation, technology management, and advanced materials, including “Cybercrime and Business: Strategies for Global Corporate Security” and “The Advanced Materials Revolution: Technology and Economic Growth in the Age of Globalization.”

A Lifelong Commitment to Teaching and Mentorship

As a professor, Dr. Moskowitz enjoys helping students approach new ideas with confidence rather than fear. “It is important that young people remain flexible in their thinking about their lives.” He encourages students to explore new paths, even if it means changing direction.

Dr. Moskowitz also credits two critical mentors: his father, Fred Moskowitz, an electrical engineer known for the Moskowitz Factoring Theorem, and Richard Cooperman, a longtime management consultant in Washington, D.C.

Looking Forward: Expanding His Research and Inspiring Future Innovators

Dr. Moskowitz plans to continue writing and exploring the future of technology. “I'm working on a book on global nanotechnology and national competitiveness,” he shares. After that, he expects to study how the fourth Industrial Revolution will shape economies and workforces in the coming decades.

Through it all, Dr. Moskowitz's mission remains steady: help people understand the technologies that shape our world and prepare the next generation to lead with curiosity and creativity.
