Traditional jobs were once the standard for most American workers. The goal was to build toward longevity at an organization, especially for those who found themselves at large corporations or in big tech.

This sentiment has shifted in recent years, with reports noting that sweeping layoffs in tech and other industries are common, and the average worker now stays at an organization for less than four years. As the stability of traditional labor wanes, more workers are looking for alternatives that don't rely on large corporations or volatile industries.

Here’s the issue: while traditional employment is less appealing than it once was, becoming an entrepreneur or launching a business has widely been considered a risky endeavor. Skills that have made someone successful in a corporate career can certainly translate to work as an entrepreneur, but owning a business is a separate challenge entirely. Costly start-up fees, overhead, marketing, managing multiple software systems and expensive staff are some of the many reasons starting a business can be overwhelming.

These challenges aren’t impossible to overcome, especially with the new crop of AI-supported tools that are emerging, which aim to reduce some of the common barriers associated with starting and running a business.

Expanding AI’s Role in Business Creation

As traditional jobs become less predictable and administrative work takes up a larger share of time, Durable recently announced an expansion of its AI platform aimed at lowering the barriers to small business ownership. The updated platform goes beyond website creation, enabling individuals to launch and manage parts of a business through a single platform, including tools for discoverability, customer management, payments and day-to-day operations. Durable’s platform is designed to help independent entrepreneurs move more efficiently from business concept to launch. Powered by AI, Durable enables users to launch a customer-facing website and core business tools more quickly, reducing the need to coordinate multiple platforms or complex setups.

“Traditional employment is no longer the stable choice it once was,” James Clift, Durable founder, says. “With AI, more people can start and run businesses without needing specific expertise in marketing, development and operations. Durable is designed to simplify many of the traditional steps of building a business, allowing people to spend more time focused on their core skills.”

The Value of Integrated Systems for Entrepreneurship

The rapid growth of AI tools in recent years has created endless opportunities, but also presents a unique challenge for entrepreneurs: fragmentation. Sure, AI tools can help solve problems, but managing multiple tools can quickly snowball into a full-time job.

Since its early stages, Durable has focused on addressing this challenge. Founded in 2022, the startup initially focused on an AI-powered website builder and says it has helped customers launch a large number of websites worldwide. Recognizing that today’s entrepreneurs require more support than websites alone, it has expanded its offerings to provide a broader set of AI-powered features for building and managing a business.

Beyond website creation, Durable’s expanded platform enables users to launch and run many aspects of their business within a single system. Entrepreneurs can describe their business in plain language and Durable can generate a branded online presence. The platform also offers tools for discoverability, customer relationship management and payment. Additionally, integrated tools support daily business operations. Its website describes the tool as an AI business partner that adapts to the context of each business over time, helping owners handle daily tasks fewer external tools or additional support.

Durable also launched an updated free tier that allows users to start a business online without upfront costs. The plan is intended to help new entrepreneurs validate their ideas and find early customers before committing to paid tools. Durable’s mission is to help people build businesses that last. It emphasizes that AI can handle busywork so people can focus on serving customers and generating sustainable revenue.

The role of AI in entrepreneurship and business creation is still taking shape. Tools like Durable highlight how some of the common barriers for new entrepreneurs may be reduced in today’s changing labor market.
