Entire March 12 Thurman-Porter CBS boxing card is canceled
The March 12 boxing event that was to be aired on CBS in prime time and featured the welterweight title fight between Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter has been canceled in its entirety, it was announced Wednesday.
After extensive discussions between DiBella Entertainment, the show's promoter, Showtime Networks and the Mohegan Sun, the venue decided that none of the other fights on the card could be salvaged.
Thurman was involved in a car accident last week and his fight with Porter had to be postponed. But it was hoped that the co-feature, a featherweight bout between three-division world champions Abner Mares and Fernando Montiel, could be saved and aired on Showtime. But various factors, including scheduling and programming issues, prevented the parties involved from doing so.
Mares vs. Montiel will remain paired with the Thurman vs. Porter title fight, which is being rescheduled for a later date on CBS. The other bouts on the card will be rescheduled on a date or dates to be announced.
"Every effort was made to move forward with the remainder of this excellent card, despite the tight time frame," said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. "However, scheduling conflicts and other factors forced us to make the unfortunate decision to cancel the entire event. There are a number of attractive fights on the table and we look forward to presenting all of them to the fans as soon as possible."
Other fights on the card included Gary Russell Jr. vs. Patrick Hyland for Russell's WBC featherweight title, and Edwin Rodriguez vs. Thomas Williams Jr. in a light heavyweight bout. Former light heavyweight champ Chad Dawson was also expected to be on the card, though there was no opponent announced.
Tickets purchased for the March 12 event will be refunded at the point of purchase.
