Mike Tyson vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr.: What to know for April fight

Mike Tyson fighting Floyd Mayweather in an exhibition won’t be as bizarre as the night Tony Galento, the heavyweight boxer who beat Joe Louis in 1939, fought an octopus.

But the bout between Tyson and Mayweather still rates no less than odd.

The matchup would have been unthinkable when the two men were in their prime. Tyson was a heavyweight, typically weighing in at about 220, and Mayweather, a welterweight, typically fought at 147 pounds.

But this is the era of oldies but goodies climbing into the ring.

Mayweather, 49, retired from professional boxing with a record of 50-0 after he beat Conor McGregor by TKO in 2017. But he’s stayed fit since then while fighting in eight exhibition matches – the last one coming in 2024, a non-scored bout against John Gotti III.

Tyson, 59, looked his age when he lost to Jake Paul by unanimous decision in 2024. But Tyson cited health issues stemming from the ulcer he suffered months before the fight. He looked much sharper in an exhibition against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020.
