Virginia lacrosse coach Lars Tiffany out after 10 seasons, 2 national championships

Updated May 18, 2026, 4:40 p.m. ET

Virginia men’s lacrosse coach Lars Tiffany will not return for the Cavaliers next season, the school announced Monday, May 18. In a tersely worded statement, the university revealed the change in leadership in the program, and that a national search for a new coach would begin immediately.

There was no comment from the school in the release.

Virginia men's lacrosse coach Lars Tiffany prepares to take the field ahead of his team's game against Duke in the 2019 NCAA tournament semifinals at Lincoln Financial Field.

Tiffany had just concluded his 10th season in Charlottesville, where he posted a record of 108-51 and led the Cavaliers to national championships in 2019 and 2021. He arrived in 2017, a year after coaching Brown, his alma mater, to the NCAA semifinals.

UVa struggled this season before winning the ACC tournament and earning the No. 5 seed in the NCAA tournament. But the Cavaliers saw their postseason run end with a first-round loss to Georgetown at home.

Tiffany’s contract ran only through the current season, and though he told various news outlets last week that he expected to be back next year, he and university officials apparently couldn’t come to terms on an extension.

Virginia is hosting the men's lacrosse semifinals and national title game on May 23 and May 25, respectively.
