Entering the first day of the NCAA Softball Tournament, only two national seeds had dropped their first regional game in the last two decades.

Stetson University added a third team to the wrong side of the NCAA Softball Tournament record books on May 15, shocking No. 9 national seed Florida State.

The Hatters delivered the first upset of the 2026 postseason with an 8-3 win over the Seminoles at JoAnne Graf Field in Tallahassee, Florida, behind a 3-for-4 day at the plate from Amber Chumley. The Stetson left fielder had four RBIs on the day, three of which came on a three-run home run in the top of the third.

It's just the second-ever win for ASUN's conference champion against Florida State, and the first since 1987.

The win also sends Stetson further into the winner's bracket, and helps the Hatters avoid elimination from the 64-team NCAA Softball Tournament bracket on May 16. Stetson will face the winner of Jacksonville State vs. Central Florida at noon ET on Saturday in Tallahassee.

But with the unexpected win for the Hatters, it's created some curiosity as to where Stetson's campus is located. Here's what to know:

Where is Stetson University?

Despite Stetson's nickname, the Hatters aren't located in Texas, where the famed and eponymously named brand of hat is manufactured. Stetson University is actually in the state of Florida. The Hatters' campus is located in DeLand, roughly an hour drive north of Orlando and a four-hour drive southeast of Tallahassee.

How many NCAA Softball Tournament wins does Stetson University have?

Friday's win for Stetson in the NCAA Softball Tournament was just the Hatters' second-ever postseason win in program history. Stetson is making its first appearance in the postseason since 2014.

What conference does Stetson softball compete in?

Stetson competes in the Atlantic Sun Conference, commonly referred to as the ASUN. The Hatters have been a member of the ASUN since 1985.

Who does Stetson softball play next in NCAA Softball Tournament?

Stetson will face the winner of Jacksonville State vs. UCF in its second game of the Tallahassee Regional on May 16. The Hatters will play at noon ET against either the Gamecocks or Knights.

If Stetson wins Saturday's game, it will advance to Sunday's regional final. If Stetson loses Saturday's game, it will face a double-elimination game at 5 p.m. ET against the winner of Saturday's first elimination game.
