USA hockey routs Great Britain at world championships: Highlights
Mike BrehmThe United States had some catching up to do on Sunday, May 17, entering the day in fifth place in Group A at the men's hockey world championships after its opening loss to Switzerland.
But a 5-1 rout of Great Britain, its second game in the seven-game preliminary round, moved the defending champion USA into fourth place. The top four teams in each group make the quarterfinals.
The game was close early and the British tied it in the second period on a power play goal. Isaac Howard broke the tie in the second with the first of his two goals.
The Americans' third line also stood out with Paul Cotter and Mathieu Olivier each getting a goal and two assists.
USA goalie Devin Cooley shook off a high shot and finished the game with 19 saves.

"You have to be willing to grind through games in these tournaments and I thought we did just that today," said USA coach Don Granato. "It took us a while to get rewarded, but we stuck with it and got three important points."
The Americans, whose title last year was their first since 1933, will face Finland on Monday (10:20 a.m. ET, NHL Network). Austria, Finland and Switzerland are tied atop Group A with two wins and six points.
