Kentucky Derby expert picks: Who are top 5 contenders for 2026 race?

The horse that sired three of the past six Kentucky Derby champions, and two of the leading favorites for the 2026 race at Churchill Downs, never even competed in the first leg of horse racing's Triple Crown.

Into Mischief developed an abscess in his foot in the lead-up to the 2008 Kentucky Derby and finished his career with three wins in six races, but no major victories on his ledger. That's not the case with his offspring, and USA TODAY Network horse racing expert Jason Frakes is picking the two horses with Into Mischief's pedigree as his top two contenders at the 2026 Kentucky Derby.

Renegade is the Arkansas Derby winner and Kentucky Derby favorite. Commandment isn't far behind in the current morning-line odds after reeling off four-straight wins, including the Florida Derby. Can one of those horses make it two years in a row, and four wins in the past seven Kentucky Derby, for Into Mischief's bloodline?
