Celtics star Jaylen Brown rips Stephen A. Smith as feud escalates

May 18, 2026, 10:42 a.m. ET

The ongoing feud between Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown and ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith seems to have taken on a life of its own.

Brown fired the latest shots on his Twitch stream Sunday night with an expletive-laced tirade that took issue with Smith's May 7 comments on ESPN's "First Take" in which he said Brown needed to "be quiet."

“My offer still stands," Brown responded on May 17 after playing the "First Take" clip (Warning: NSFW language).

"You want me to be quiet and stop streaming? Well, I want you to be quiet and get off these networks. Because you’re not using your platform to do real journalism. You’re using your platform to use clickbait.”

Brown was also upset with Smith's insinuation that Celtics teammate Jayson Tatum didn't want to appear on Brown's Twitch stream because he was upset by things Brown said in the wake of Boston's playoff loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

“What type of journalism is this? Jayson Tatum hasn’t been on my stream, and this is what we’re talking about on First Take?" Brown questioned.

"Why are you doing journalism on me having guests on my stream? And this is a part of the reason why I started streaming. This is a part of the reason why people use the term ‘clown,’ and it synchronizes with someone like Stephen A. Smith. Because this is what you’re using your platform for. What are you talking about?”

Celtics forward Jaylen Brown disputes an official's call during a Feb. 6, 2026, game against the Miami Heat.

Brown has been very outspoken with his opinions, especially after the Celtics' season ended prematurely in the first round of the playoffs.

He was fined $50,000 by the NBA for criticizing calls by the officials after the Game 7 loss to the 76ers. And he refuted rumors fueled by Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady that he had developed a rift with the Celtics front office.

Those incidents led to Smith's initial "be quiet" comments and an escalation to their war of words.
