NFL insider Tom Pelissero expected to be among ESPN layoffs

Updated July 21, 2026, 4:00 p.m. ET

NFL Media insider Tom Pelissero is expected to be part of ESPN's layoffs on Tuesday, July 21, USA TODAY Sports has learned.

Pelissero's departure comes just under six months after ESPN officially acquired NFL Media and its assets from the NFL in a multi-billion dollar acquisition.

Pelissero originally joined NFL Media in 2017 to contribute to both NFL Network and NFL.com. He eventually became a prominent insider with the company, working alongside Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo and being involved in NFL Media's "The Insiders" podcast.

ESPN has already signed Rapoport to a new deal and is nearing a new contract with Garafolo, according to a July 2 report from Front Office Sports' Ryan Glasspiegel. The two will join Adam Schefter, Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano – as ESPN's top NFL insiders.

Who will hire Tom Pelissero?

What's next for Pelissero? Glasspiegel reports he is expected to be a hot ticket on the free agent market.

The Athletic is notably in the market for an NFL insider after Dianna Russini departed the company after her relationship with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel fell under scrutiny. Glasspiegel noted CBS, Netflix and Amazon's "Thursday Night Football" as potential landing spots for Pelissero.

Pelissero won't be the only NFL-related layoff among ESPN's latest swath. Ryan Clark is also among the talent who has reportedly been let go by the company.
