Spurs dethrone defending champion Thunder in Game 7 to make NBA Finals
James H. WilliamsThe San Antonio Spurs will play for their first NBA championship since 2014 after knocking off the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals, 111-103 on Saturday, May 30.
The Spurs will host the New York Knicks in Game 1 in the best-of-7 finals on Wednesday, June 3.
Victor Wembanyama led the Spurs with 22 points, one of seven San Antonio players to reach double figures in scoring.
The unanimous Defensive Player of the Year also added seven rebounds and hit 3 of 5 3-pointers. The Spurs star produced 20+ points in all seven games of the series. Wembanyama also became the second-youngest player (22 years and 146 days) to be named to the All-NBA First Team and play in the NBA Finals in the same season.
Julian Champagnie went 6-for-10 from beyond the arc and scored 20 points.
The defending NBA champion Thunder got another superb game from two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who scored a game-high 35 points, but he did not get enough help from the rest of his team in the decisive Game 7.
The young Spurs now seek their sixth NBA championship in franchise history after stunning the Thunder on the road in Oklahoma City.

Mitch Johnson of the Spurs became the fourth youngest coach (39 years, 182 days) to reach the NBA Finals in the last 25 years, according to NBC Sports. The list includes Joe Mazzulla, Tyronn Lue and Mike Brown.
Victor Wembanyama named West Finals MVP

Victor Wembanyama was named the Western Conference Finals MVP after the Spurs held off the Thunder in Oklahoma City.
Wembanyama helped outscore the Thunder by 62 points throughout the series when he was on the floor, according to NBC's Mike Tirico.

Victor Wembanyama finished out the game in foul trouble down the stretch to help secure the Game 7 victory. He had five fouls late in the quarter.
Wembanyama had 22 points and seven rebounds. He shot 7-of-15 from the field and 3-for-5 from the 3-point line. Julian Champagnie contributed to the victory with 20 points and six rebounds.

The Spurs managed to overcome the late push by the Thunder in the first half. The Thunder outscored the Spurs 28-24 in the second quarter. Stephon Castle led the Spurs with 12 points in the first half. Victor Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox each added 10 points.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander produced 19 points for the Thunder on 8-of-11 shooting. He also had five assists and four rebounds.

Luguentz Dort made a 24-foot three-point jumper to tie the game. The Thunder pulled ahead with its first lead of the game after Jaylin Williams' 14-foot jumper to make it 51-49 with 1:33 left in the quarter. Both shots came off assists from Shai Gil Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

The Spurs made 5-of-6 from the field to start the game. The Thunder started the game by making their first two shots before missing their next three attempts.

After winning his match at the French Open, American players Frances Tiafoe wished Victor Wembanyama good luck in Game 7 after winning his match at the French Open. Tiafoe managed to fight back from being down two sets to beat Jaime Faria. During a postgame interview, Tiafoe said he was a big fan of the French basketball player.
“I'm a big fan of him. All the best,” Tiafoe said. “I hope he gets to the NBA finals. It's a huge game tonight.”
Thunder’s Game 7 injury report

The Thunder will have three players miss Game 7 due to injury. Jalen Williams was ruled out on Friday due to a left hamstring strain. Ajay Mitchell has also been ruled out with a right calf strain.
Thomas Sober also remains out as he recovers from ACL surgery.
The Spurs did not have anyone listed on the injury report for the game.

The Spurs entered the playoffs as the Western Conference's No. 2 seed (62-20), matched up against the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round. Although the Spurs dropped a game in that series, they dominated the remainder, winning in five games before taking on the Minnesota Timberwolves in Round 2.
