Fernando Mendoza has a chance at history if Indiana football can win the national championship.
If the No. 1-ranked Hoosiers (15-0) can defeat No. 10 Miami (13-2) in the College Football Playoff Orange Bowl national championship at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Monday, Jan. 19, Mendoza will join an elite group of players — those who won the Heisman Trophy and a national championship in the same season.
Mendoza ―the first Indiana player to win the Heisman Trophy ― would break a six-year drought and become the 18th player in college football history to pull off such a feat.
Who was the last player to achieve the feat? Here's what you need to know about players in NCAA history to win the Heisman Trophy and national championship in the same season:

Last player to win Heisman Trophy, national championship in same season
In Alabama's 52-24 national championship game win over Ohio State, Crimson Tide wide receiver DeVonta Smith finished with an impressive 12 catches for 215 yards and three touchdowns. He also added one kick return for 6 yards and two punt returns for 16 yards.
Smith was only able to play little more than a half, as he exited early in the third quarter with a jammed finger. He scored all three touchdowns in the first half, including a 42-yard touchdown catch from Mac Jones with 1:48 left in the first half to extend Alabama's lead to 35-17 at halftime.
He had seven catches for 130 yards in a 31-14 win over Notre Dame in the CFP semifinal game.
Here's a look at Smith's stats during the 2020 college football season that led to his Heisman Trophy:
- 2020: 117 receptions for 1,856 yards and 23 touchdowns; Four rushes for six yards and a touchdown

Players to win Heisman Trophy and national championship in same season
If Mendoza and Indiana can win the CFP championship on Jan. 19, he would become the first Big Ten player since 1997 to win both the Heisman and the national championship in the same season. That year, Michigan cornerback Charles Woodson won the honors as Michigan was voted national champions of the AP poll, splitting the title with Nebraska, which won the Coaches Poll.
In the national championship game against Washington State, Woodson had an interception of Ryan Leaf in the end zone, two rushes for 6 yards and one catch for 7 yards in a 21-16 Wolverines win.
