Injuries: Ryan Fitzpatrick aims for return after surgery

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – When the New York Jets try to snap out of their recent funk against the Texans, their starting quarterback will be ready to go.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, who underwent surgery Friday to repair a torn ligament on his left, non-throwing thumb, said Wednesday that he plans on starting Sunday against the Houston Texans. Fitzpatrick did not practice Wednesday, but was in pads and was seen throwing the ball during individual positional drills.

“I think I’ll definitely be able to do a lot more tomorrow,” Fitzpatrick said. “But we had a pretty positive day today in terms of being out there and throwing it around.”

The Jets (5-4) have lost three of their last four games and desperately need a victory to stay in contention for one of two AFC wild-card berths.

Head coach Todd Bowles, however, was less certain when asked about his quarterback’s status to play on Sunday, not committing to naming a starter and saying he would know more after Thursday’s practice.

Because Fitzpatrick didn’t practice, backup Geno Smith played all of the offensive reps in Wednesday’s session.

“If somehow Fitz doesn’t play, we’re more than confident that Geno can do the job,” Bowles said.

Some injury news, based on reports around the league on Wednesday:

— Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford's MRI confirmed a separated left shoulder, according to ESPN. The report also said he has a concussion, but "he wants to to play" Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and will see how he feels later in the week. RB Ryan Mathews also sat out practice as he recovers from a concussion.

— Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers was limited with a right shoulder injury. RB Eddie Lacy practiced after sitting out last week with a groin injury.

— Buccaneers WR Vincent Jackson (knee) is expected to miss Sunday's game, according to NFL Network.

— Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte (knee) and WR Alshon Jeffery (groin) were limited in practice.

— Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson sat out with a sore ankle.

— Seattle Seahawks LB Bruce Irvin will sit out this week with a knee injury, coach Pete Carroll said.
