Russell Wilson joining CBS Sports. Is the 10-time Pro Bowl QB retiring from NFL?

CBS Sports has a new quarterback.

Russell Wilson is finalizing a deal to become an analyst for CBS Sports, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. It's a move that will see the Super Bowl champion and 10-time Pro Bowl signal-caller exchange his helmet and jersey for a microphone and suit.

Wilson will join a cast that includes James Brown, Nate Burleson and Bill Cowher on "The NFL Today" pregame show on the network.

There had been questions about the state of Wilson's playing career after he started only three games for the New York Giants in 2025 and posted an 0-3 record. He lost the starter job after that, when the Giants opted to move forward with Jaxson Dart.

The New York Jets brought him in for a visit on April 28, offering Wilson the opportunity to continue his playing career as a backup to Geno Smith – who was his backup with the Seattle Seahawks. The quarterback was said to be weighing the Jets’ offer or a pivot to television, something he discussed with the New York Post's Ryan Dunleavy on May 6 at BTIG Charity Day.

“It was great,” Wilson said of his visit with the Jets. “They offered me, and I’m trying to figure out what the next best thing is for me to do. I still know I can play ball at a high level, but also I have an opportunity to do TV so we’ll see what happens.”

There were some questions about Wilson’s desire to be Smith's backup, but he didn’t seem to have an issue with the idea.

"Geno is a great guy," Wilson said. "We've been great friends, great teammates. I'm just focused on today."

Wilson’s biggest thing, at the end of the day, was just to remain involved with the game – something both opportunities offered.

"I just love football," Wilson said. "I love ball, being in it in every way, staying ready to play through and just every day I'm training and getting ready, but also too I think I have a lot of great opportunities. The good news is there's a lot I could have done.

"I think playing 14-plus years has been amazing for me and I'm just grateful I get to do what I love to do."

Wilson's play has declined in recent years, as evidenced by the fact that the quarterback has played for three different teams over the last three seasons.

That doesn't take away from the success the quarterback achieved over 14 seasons, considering he posted a 121-80-1 record in 202 regular-season starts. After all, he surpassed all expectations set for a third-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Now he'll bring that unique perspective to the studio on Sundays.

Wilson has not officially retired.

The quarterback is pausing his playing career for now, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. It means Wilson could leave CBS and join a team if an opportunity presents itself, but it remains to be seen whether the quarterback is open to that idea.

Regardless, no paperwork has been filed and Wilson is still eligible to keep playing if he wants.
