Chargers release 15-year vet Takeo Spikes

• Longtime linebacker was due to make %243 million in 2013

The San Diego Chargers have released inside linebacker Takeo Spikes, a 15-year veteran who just completed his second season with the team, the fifth club that's employed him in his career.

"Takeo is a true professional and a class act," Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said in a statement. "We're grateful for his many contributions to the Chargers organization, both on and off the field, and wish him nothing but the best in the future."

Though Spikes turned 36 late last season, he wants to continue playing. The two-time Pro Bowler tweeted Wednesday: "Thank you to the @chargers, Spanos family & fans for the opportunity to represent the organization. I look forward to this upcoming season."

Spikes had one season left on a three-year deal he signed with the Chargers in 2010. He was slated to earn a base salary of $3 million this season.

Spikes was credited with only 78 tackles last season, his lowest total in a 16-game season since the NFL began keeping tackle stats in 2001. Still, he's missed only one game in the past five seasons.
