Garrett Nussmeier drafted by Chiefs: How QB fits with Patrick Mahomes

April 25, 2026, 6:57 p.m. ET

Garrett Nussmeier, NFL quarterback.

The sentence should have a nice ring to it for the now-former LSU Tigers quarterback. It took a lot longer than expected, but Nussmeier is officially in the club now.

Nussmeier was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs with the No. 249 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

A year ago, many expected him to be among the first players off the board in Pittsburgh, but a rocky, injury-filled year was enough to send the quarterback's stock tumbling. Tests at the NFL combine revealed a cyst on Nussmeier's spine that was pressing on a nerve and causing discomfort, according to NFL Media's Tom Pelissero. While that clarity was certainly a positive for the quarterback's sake, it could've also been a bonus for his draft stock.

Ranked as the 56th-best player in the class on USA TODAY Sports' big board, the LSU signal caller checked in as the third-best quarterback in the class.

If he can return to his pre-2025 level of play, then the Chiefs might've gotten a steal. Until that time, the player and team will work to turn that potential into reality.

Here's what to know about how Nussmeier fits on his new team's depth chart and his overall fit in Kansas City.

How does Garrett Nussmeier fit with the Chiefs?

Nussmeier joins a competition for the third spot on the depth chart in Kansas City. While he won't play right away, or potentially anytime soon, the former LSU signal caller might've landed in the perfect spot.

His draft slide likely stemmed from those medical concerns, but there is no doubt he has talent. Working with Mahomes and Andy Reid could bring out the best in Nussmeier, which bodes well for his future career. And, considering Mahomes is working his way back from a torn ACL, the rookie should be afforded plenty of opportunity to take part in offseason activities.

Those will be valuable reps for a player like Nussmeier, who was projected to be a top draft pick at this time last year.

If he actually makes it on the field, Nussmeier would be in good hands. Surrounded by plenty of talent on offense and a capable coaching staff, it's hard to ask for much more.

It took longer than anyone would've hoped, but maybe it worked out for the best.
