Rodman hits out at NWSL referees after Spirit-Wave match
Trinity Rodman has hit out at the quality of NWSL referees after the Washington Spirit star claimed there were several missed calls in Sunday's match against the San Diego Wave.
Rodman did not stay quiet after the Spirit pulled out a late 2-1 win thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Rosemonde Kouassi.
The win took the Spirit to 14 straight games without defeat in all competitions, solidifying their spot in second place in the NWSL table.
But Rodman was not totally pleased even after the dramatic win, going public with her complaints on Monday in her Instagram story.
Rodman said that referees told her "all ball" for "90 minutes straight on every foul yesterday."
The 23-year-old used a photo of one particular challenge in the box from Wave defender Perle Morroni to illustrate her point.
Rodman listed off her complaints one by one.
- Both quads wrapped around left leg
- Calls all ball and somehow it's a goal kick ... out on me
- Wasn't even checked on VAR
- This is in no way coming for individual players. This is one of many examples ... Refs need to be better at managing these games. No words.
The quality of NWSL officiating has been a frequent talking point for years. Among the complaints is the fact that the NWSL pools its officials from the second tier of the Professional Referee Organization, which identifies, trains and develops match officials for pro-level men's and women's soccer in the United States.
MLS referees are assigned out of the top tier, while NWSL referees are assigned out of the next tier, PRO2.
