Any city that is lucky enough to be awarded the chance to host an Olympic Games by the International Olympic Committee will have an impact, both historically and culturally, as well as financially.

Each bidding city must undergo a rigorous application process before the IOC announces the winner, typically five to 10 years before the host city's year.

The 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics are getting underway, and the host was awarded the duties in 2019, beating out Stockholm, Sweden. It is the fourth time Italy has hosted the Olympics, following the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin and the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. The 1944 Winter Olympics were scheduled to be held in Cortina d'Ampezzo, but were canceled due to World War II; the games were held in Cortina in 1956.

Olympics future locations: Winter and Summer Games

2028 Summer Olympics: Los Angeles, California (July 14-July 30)

The United States hosts the Summer Games for the first time since 1996, when Atlanta, Georgia, was the host city.

2030 Winter Olympics: French Alps (February 1-February 17)

After Paris's success in hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics, the Winter Olympics return to France for the fourth time in 2030 (Chamonix, 1924; Grenoble, 1968; Albertville, 1992). This time, four cities, Haute-Savoie, Savoie, Nice, and Briançon, will share hosting duties.

2032 Summer Olympics: Brisbane, Australia (July 23-August 6)

The land down under is back hosting the Summer Games rotation for the third time, after Sydney hosted in 2000 and Melbourne hosted in 1956. It will be winter in Australia when the Olympics start, and the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast will also host numerous events.

2034 Winter Olympics: Salt Lake City, Utah (February 10-February 26)

The Winter Games return to the Beehive State for the first time since 2002, and it remains one of three cities in the United States to have been awarded hosting duties, after Lake Placid, New York, which last hosted in 1980 and Squaw Valley, California in 1960.

Confirmed bids for the 2036 Summer Olympics include Doha, Qatar; Nusantara, Indonesia; Ahmedabad, India; Istanbul, Turkey; and Santiago, Chile. The International Olympic Committee has yet to announce when it will announce who will host.
