'Ted Lasso' star Cristo Fernandez signs with professional soccer team

May 12, 2026, 11:47 a.m. ET

Cristo Fernández is making the transition from a TV-show soccer pitch to a real one.

Fernández, better known as Dani Rojas on the hit Apple TV show "Ted Lasso," has signed a contract with El Paso Locomotive FC of the USL Championship.

The club did not disclose terms of the deal with the 35-year-old, who returns to the field after nearly two decades.

Fernández has been on trial with El Paso for two months, playing in the preseason before officially signing for the club on Tuesday, May 12.

“Cristo is a great addition to our roster, adding another attacking threat to our forward line,” said Locomotive head coach Junior Gonzalez. “His passion for the game and leadership qualities for our locker room allow us to continue growing the positive culture we strive for as a club.”

El Paso has already kicked off the 2026 season, posting a 4W-2D-3L record through nine games.

Fernández played in the academy of his hometown side Tecos FC before he turned to acting after a serious knee injury at age 15.

The Mexican forward has recently been aiming to make a comeback, having also played with the Chicago Fire's reserve side during the preseason.

“Fútbol has always been a huge part of my life and identity, and no matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart,” said Fernández.

“I’m incredibly grateful to El Paso Locomotive FC — the club, coaches, staff, and especially my teammates — for opening the doors and giving me the opportunity to compete from day one."

The fourth season of "Ted Lasso" is set to debut on Apple TV on Aug. 5. Fernández was not included among the named cast members in Apple's announcement, leaving the fate of Dani Rojas up in the air.
