Watch Kylian Mbappe score his first goal at 2026 World Cup, set France record
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — Kylian Mbappé has France’s first goal of the 2026 World Cup.
Who else would it be?
Mbappe delivered in France's opener against Senegal, a crucial strike in the 66th minute that put Les Blues ahead after a frustrating scoreless hour at MetLife Stadium.
The connection between Michael Olise and Mbappé was loading, loading, loading … and unleashed in the 66th minute, as Mbappé put France up 1-0 with a one-time, right-footed finish after receiving another through ball in the box from his attacking partner.
But this is the Mbappé show, and surely there would be an encore.
That came in stoppage time, with France now clinging to a 2-1 lead. Mbappé collected a loose ball roughly 30 yards from the net and ripped a fireball past the keeper to become France's all-time national team goal-scorer, passing Olivier Giroud. With 14 World Cup goals, he passed Just Fontaine for the most in national team history.
Mbappe had his coming out party as a 19-year-old at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, leading France to its second championship and won the tournament's Best Young Player after scoring four goals in his team's seven games.
He took his side back to the final in 2022 and scored only the second-ever hat trick in World Cup final history, but France lost to Argentina on penalty kicks.
Mbappe just finished his second season with Real Madrid after seven years at Paris Saint-Germain and scored 40 goals in all competitions both seasons, but the Spanish giants haven't win La Liga or the UEFA Champions League since his arrival. PSG meanwhile, has won back-to-back Champions League titles since his departure.
